Zeldzame Mensen is the result of a rare collaboration between Lukas Simonis and Pierre Bastien, two artists based in Rotterdam. The album title, which translates to “rare people,” is a play on the expression “rare disease,” perfectly describing the unconventional union between these two musicians and the experimental intensity of their work. The album was created during the difficult circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the two artists captured rare moments of creativity.
This is their second collaboration (following “Mots d’Heures: Gousses, Rames” in 2002), with Simonis’s electric sounds merging with Bastien’s organic textures to create free-form compositions. The tracks, often recorded spontaneously and as improvisations, allow for raw energy and palpable emotion. These “Instant Songs,” are made of spontaneity.
The album artwork, created by Red Bol, perfectly reflects the intense, experimental nature of the music with a dense, captivating design.
