Connoisseurs of improvised music can rejoice at the release of Ichida by Japanese multi-instrumentalist Eiko Ishibashi and contemporary American composer Darin Gray. Adroitly mixed and recorded by experimental musician Jim O’Rourke, the Black Truffle (Oren Ambarchi) release is an organic meld of dark energy and oneiric atmospheres. Opening with a duet which layers Ishibashi’s flute against the upright bass of Gray, Ichida meanders confidently into conventional territories before defiantly pulling back to ensure the overall impression remains fresh and unpredictable. Originally performed at Tokyo’s Super Deluxe in 2013, the release champions fine examples of Ishibashi’s piano technique and stunning electronic work by both members of the duo
