A short story by Haruki Murakami published in 2013 made into a film by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who is highly regarded as No. 1 young talented director in the Japanese film industry. “Drive My Car” has been further boosted by a number of firsts in Japanese film history, including winning the 2021 Cannes International Film Festival for Best Screenplay and winning the 94th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film.
The soundtrack by Eiko Ishibashi, which was sold out as soon as it was released in January of this year, is now available on a long-awaited additional pressing. The soundtrack is a wonderful blend of live acoustic, electronics, and even the environmental sounds used in the film itself. Ten pieces of music liberated from two melodies, the music written for the film is newly constructed as one musical work. Jim O’Rourke, Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, Marty Holoubek, Toshiaki Sudo, and Atsuko Hatano, who have previously worked with Ishibashi on her original works in the past, participated in the project. The album was mixed and mastered by Jim O’Rourke, with jacket design by Yutaka Kimura (Central67), who has worked on many of Ishibashi’s works, and jacket illustrations by Mayo Akao, based on visuals from the film. Here is a crowning work that shed luster on all around the film.
