Since 2014, guitarist Frederik Leroux and percussionist Kris Vanderstraeten have formed a remarkable duo. Averse to strategy and free from the center and that’s how it sounds. In 2018, ‘without webs’ (Aspen 004) was released and with that they embarked on the path of free improvisation, packed with bitter humour, playful seriousness and experimental frivolity. This album sounds democratic and bold. Bold, because every musician is free to use conventional or alternative playing techniques by using all kinds of objects to scratch, pluck, strike, hit. Democratic, because the instruments have no prescribed role. Any musician can speak up or hold back, and everything in between. The individual expressions are regularly indistinguishable in the texture and movement of the collective. The dynamic, contrasting maneuvers that typified ‘without webs’ give way to control, delineation and precision on this album. Between observation and action, the musicians knead the music that nevertheless continues to progress
