Full-colour sleeve and 4-sided insert with photos, liner notes and an extensive interview. “Zenger Station”, Christina Kubisch’s latest LP, issued by Edition Telemark, comprises two side-long works that encounter the artists delving into two very different electromagnetic environments, brought to life in ways that only she can. The first side feature the title work, “Zenger Station 1-3”
As Kubisch explains in the liner notes: “Zenger station is the name of the former electrical transformer station in Prague… I was allowed to visit the underground transformer station for the trams, which is still active. The electrical fields were so strong that the coils of my recording device were damaged… ”Zenger Station 1–3″ is the result of this special experience. The pieces are all based on electromagnetic field recordings, most of them made in Prague.” Divided into the sections – “Ground”, “Pulses”, and “Lines,” “Zenger Station 1-3” is a profoundly moving piece of work, capturing untreated sounds as they occur in the world, engaging in a deeply affecting sense of musicality, pulsing and droning amongst otherworldly timbres, textures and tones
The second side of “Zenger Station” features the roughly 20-minute-long piece “A Bus Meets a Tram Meets a Trolley”, constructed from recordings of an old tram in Rome, an electrical bus in Bangkok, and a trolley bus in Bratislava, through which Kubisch attempted to translate the feeling of traveling with her custom-made electromagnetic headphones in different cities, listening to the electromagnetic waves: “There is no special destination to reach, the soundscape changes all the time, and something unexpected may occur at any moment”. Across its length, the artist immerses the listener within transportive, endlessly evolving and surprising expanses of entwined sound, entirely transforming how we understand and engage with the world in which we live
